Is the end of prohibition upon us?
Posted on September 21st, 2009 by Cam Wright (Dakta Bourbon) | Filed under Information, News. No Comments »
Fortune Magazine’s article about how Medical Marijuana is giving activists in the United States a platform to show that as a legalized business marijuana can work, and how the end of prohibition may be upon us.
Reposted from http://money.cnn.com/2009/09/11/magazines/fortune/medical_marijuana_legalizing.fortune/?postversion=2009091116
(Fortune Magazine) — When Irvin Rosenfeld, 56, picks me up at the Fort Lauderdale airport, his SUV reeks of marijuana. The vice president for sales at a local brokerage firm, Rosenfeld has been smoking 10 to 12 marijuana cigarettes a day for 38 years, he says.
That’s probably unusual in itself, but what makes Rosenfeld exceptional is that for the past 27 years, he has been copping his weed directly from the United States government.
Every 25 days Rosenfeld goes to a pharmacy and picks up a tin of 300 federally grown and rolled cigarettes that have been sent there for him by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), acting with approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Read the rest of this entry »

Tonight at 7.30pm on TV3’s 60 minutes, there is an article titled ‘Ganja Granny’. Awesomely enough, it appears to be the headline story, and is advertised on TV3’s Homepage.
Taken from http://www.3news.co.nz/Ganja-Granny/tabid/755/articleID/121563/cat/923/Default.aspx
She’s 71-years-old and looks like everyone’s perfect grandmother. But she’s been found guilty of drug dealing – masterminding a criminal operation.
Did the police get it right? And if so, what made this otherwise blameless grandmother break the law?
60 Minutes reporter Karen McCarthy investigates.

Some Potent Arguments For Legalizing Marijuana
Posted on September 19th, 2009 by Cam Wright (Dakta Bourbon) | Filed under Information, News. No Comments »
As Maryland in the United States weighs up legalizing medicinal marijuana Robert McCartney, a Washington Post journalist interviews students at Montgomery College’s Rockville campus. Worth a read.

As Maryland weighs legalizing medical marijuana, it should consider my experience when I visited the student lounge at Montgomery College’s Rockville campus at lunchtime last week and began interviewing randomly selected students about their views on weed.
Among the first group I approached, one of the four young men volunteered within minutes that he not only smoked marijuana but also sold it. He told me his price list: $10 a gram for “middies,” the least potent and most readily available variety; $20 a gram for “headies” with more THC; $35 for the strongest, “exotic” types, like “white widow.” Read the rest of this entry »

Want a better world? ‘Legalise drugs’ says New Scientist
Posted on September 16th, 2009 by Cam Wright (Dakta Bourbon) | Filed under Information, News. No Comments »
A while ago, I posted a video on how the decriminalization of all drugs in Portugal, has seen many of the problems around drugs solve themselves. A new article in New Scientist has backed up what the video showed us.
Taken from http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20327251.100-legalise-drugs.html
Far from protecting us and our children, the war on drugs is making the world a much more dangerous place.
SO FAR this year, about 4000 people have died in Mexico’s drugs war – a horrifying toll. If only a good fairy could wave a magic wand and make all illegal drugs disappear, the world would be a better place.
Dream on. Recreational drug use is as old as humanity, and has not been stopped by the most draconian laws. Given that drugs are here to stay, how do we limit the harm they do? Read the rest of this entry »

Cannabis to go on Trial
Posted on September 12th, 2009 by Dakta Green | Filed under Cannabis on Trial, Events, Information, News. 3 Comments »
Cannabis to go on trial
After more than thirty years since enactment, the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 will face a major challenge when the well known cannabis dactivist, Dakta Green, puts cannabis on trial.
“For the first time since the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 came into force, cannabis will be subjected to the scrutiny of the court.
My stay of proceedings application will be based on my interpretation of section 9 of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990.9. Right not to be subjected to torture or cruel treatment
Everyone has the right not to be subjected to torture or to cruel, degrading, or disproportionately severe treatment or punishment.
I read this section as follows: Everyone has the right not to be subjected to disproportionately severe treatment or punishment.
My argument has two main thrusts. Read the rest of this entry »

Proposed drug tests may be too harsh on stoners + news article pictures stoners as normal!
Posted on September 11th, 2009 by Cam Wright (Dakta Bourbon) | Filed under Information, News. No Comments »
With drug culture becoming mainstream, the issue of driving while baked comes to mind. The Government are pushing to get in new checks that will uncover if you are high, though the current tests are out of date.
Take a look at this article from TV3’s 6pm News: “Government want to use booze buses for drug testing”
I am please with how stoners are depicted in this article, as a normal part of society. There is a clip with a guy smoking some P, but it is separate from the greens.
Seeing cannabis in the spotlight again just shows we are getting closer to legalization!

The Green Challenge
Posted on August 21st, 2009 by Dakta Green | Filed under Events, Information. No Comments »
Welcome to the Green Challenge.
It was a late Saturday night at The Daktory. We were staying up to watch the All Blacks play South Africa due to start at 3am on Sky on The Daktory big screen.
A mixture of old and new members were gathering around the Board table for a pre game sesh. (Prior to the mid game sesh and the after game sesh. Lol)A recently turned 18 new member was enjoying the activities when she suddenly stopped what she was doing. She then looked directly at Dakta Green and with the confidence of youth bluntly stated, “I could smoke you under the table.”
Those of you that know me could quite properly surmise I was a little amused.
During the last two years I have travelled on Maryjane, our Cannabus, throughout the length and breadth of New Zealand. Together we have visited communities from Cape Reinga in the north to Bluff in the south and all the towns and cities in between. I have smoked with more people in more places than anybody in New Zealand history. And in every place there is always someone that thinks they can ‘blow’ Dakta Green away. So far they have failed.
But this young woman was not to be put off. She really thinks she can do it. I say, “Good luck.”
During the following couple of days, The Daktory was abuzz with talk about this possible challenge.
Today I confirm the challenge has been made and accepted. Read the rest of this entry »

Cannabis might just help you breath…
Posted on August 19th, 2009 by Cam Wright (Dakta Bourbon) | Filed under Information, News. No Comments »
Evidence came to light recently, that Cannabis use may help respiratory function. Though the mainly uninformed public will still argue that Tobacco smoke and Cannabis smoke are equally as bad for you, the Dunedin School of Medicine at the University of Otago, is proving this theory wrong. Maybe, Cannabis is a performance enhancing drug after all…
Taken from http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19679602
The effects of cannabis on lung function remain unclear and may be different to tobacco. We compared the associations between use of these substances and lung function in a population-based cohort (n=1037).
Cannabis and tobacco use were reported at ages 18, 21, 26, and 32 years. Spirometry, plethysmography, and carbon monoxide transfer factor were measured at age 32. Associations between lung function and exposure to each substance were adjusted for exposure to the other substance. Cumulative cannabis use was associated with higher forced vital capacity, total lung capacity, functional residual capacity, and residual volume. Read the rest of this entry »

The Legal argument makes it’s way to the 6pm News!

Last night, I was listening to 3 News on the way home from work, and was glad to hear they were running an article on California, where Medicinal Maijuana is legal. This article is currently on TV3’s ‘Most Commented’ section, showing this is a hot topic for Kiwi’s

Erick Alvaro hands over a white paper bag to his 58-year-old customer, who inspects the bag to ensure that everything he ordered over the phone is there.

Two Americas: One High, One Not.
Posted on July 14th, 2009 by Dakta Green | Filed under News. 1 Comment »
In the absence of any meaningful public discussion on cannabis law reform in New Zealand, we turn to America to follow their ongoing public debate.
The main opponents,
IN THE PROHIBITION CORNER: – Barry Richard McCaffrey, 4th Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy
He was Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) under President Bill Clinton from 1996 to 2001. As Drug Czar, McCaffrey was instrumental in negotiating a deal to place anti-drug messages in prime time television shows without acknowledging that these messages were paid for by his Office. This created quite a scandal when it was revealed in Salon.com.
“There is no silver bullet in the drug issue,” the general said. “You just can’t do law enforcement or prevention or treatment. You have to do all of it.”
General McCaffrey drew the strongest applause at a breakfast meeting with the Miami Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Community, an umbrella organization of civic and other groups, when he said, “We’re not going to solve the problem by putting another million Americans in jail.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_McCaffrey
and in the green corner: – Rob Van Dam, long time cannabis law reform advocate.
I had the pleasure of meeting and toking with Rob Van Dam when he turned up at a Friday 4.20 Albert Park protest about two years ago. He met Chris Fowlie (Norml News Editor) and was subsequently featured in Norml News.
He had no problem standing openly with the protesters. He shared our anger (at prohibition laws) and our smoke.
