    Press Release: NORML

Time To Declare Truce In War On Cannabis Users, Says Norml

Dakta Green, Auckland spokesperson for marijuana law reform organisation NORML NZ, today called for a truce in the war on cannabis as he prepares to take Mary Jane the Cannabus out on the ‘Armistice Tour’ to urge the Government to change its stance on our out-of-date and failed drug laws.

Mr Green – the founder of Auckland’s Daktory cannabis club – hits the road this Friday April 16 on a two-week tour that will see him and the Cannabus cover the North Island, inviting everyday Kiwis to come and discuss the best way to repair the Misuse of Drugs Act.

“Everybody is allowed to have their say on changes to the drug laws recommended by the New Zealand Law Commission”, said Dakta Green, “and we will be gathering as many public submissions as possible while we go.”

Public submissions to the Commission close on April 30. The Armistice Tour’s destination is Wellington where Dakta Green will personally deliver the collected submissions to the Law Commission himself, before celebrating International J-Day at Frank Kitts Park the following day on May 1.

With a fortnight left to go, NORML already has more than 600 completed submissions calling for the Commission to recommend an end to the criminalisation of cannabis smokers.

The two-week Armistice Tour will see the Cannabus drop into heartland communities like Patea, Whanganui and Palmerston North, sparking discussion on law reform and making further plans to establish Daktories nationwide, spreading the Daktory ethos of “live like it’s legal”.

Dakta Green says the tour is a call to action for everyone who wants fairness, justice and compassion rather than the continuation of a failed and futile Prohibition policy.

“Prohibition didn’t work for alcohol and it’s certainly not working for cannabis” he says. “We’re wasting hundreds of millions of taxpayer’s dollars a year arresting, processing and prosecuting ordinary New Zealanders for choosing to use a drug that is proven to be far safer than tobacco and alcohol.”

“It’s time for clear and rational thinking on this matter. The Law Commission has already made some constructive recommendations in its discussion document, particularly with regards to allowing medical cannabis. On the Armistice Tour we’ll be publicly debating this vital justice issue and encouraging our fellow New Zealanders to have their say.

“Current drug laws pit Kiwi against Kiwi by criminalising Maori, working class Pakeha, and Pasifika communities. We’re calling for an Armistice – a truce in this Drug War that attacks ordinary New Zealand families. We want peace and justice. God Defend our Free Land”, Dakta Green concluded.

San Francisco pot-farm case goes up in smoke

San Francisco’s effort to snuff out the budding indoor pot-growing trade took a bit of a hit, shall we say, when a father-and-son team of marijuana growers beat the rap.

It seemed like a pretty good haul for police and a good case for prosecutors: About 70 marijuana plants in various stages of development inside a 32nd Avenue home near Pacheco Street in the Sunset, two guns, scales, baggies and an illegal power-sapping hookup — all the characteristics of the pot farms sprouting up in the avenues.

The three-room pot farm’s father-and-son proprietors were charged with marijuana cultivation for sale. They could have been sentenced to as much as three years in state prison apiece if convicted.

    A Message from my Friend

My friend Dakta Grower (Brian Borland) is serving a sentence of 2 years 4 months in prison for cultivation and selling of cannabis. After serving one third of his sentence he has been denied early release when recently he appeared before the New Zealand Parole Board.

Would somebody in charge please explain why my friend is in jail.

    I have received the following message from Dakta Grower;

A family in Williamson County, Austin have lost custody of their 7-year-old son as part of a Child Protective Services investigation because the parents taught their children to mistrust the government, an action that deemed them to be “unsuitable parents,” according to charges leveled by police officers in CPS documents.
Drug reform activist filmmakers Barry and Candi Cooper recently had their home raided and searched by police after authorities claimed Cooper’s voice had been heard in the background of an allegedly false police report.

  • CA Marijuana Legalization Initiative to Qualify for Ballot Today

CA Marijuana Legalization Initiative to Qualify for Ballot Today

Today, an initiative that would legalize personal marijuana possession and allow regulated sales of marijuana to adults will qualify for California’s November general election ballot. A win at the ballot would be a first of its kind in U.S. history. This is a remarkable moment in the struggle to change our decades-old marijuana policies.

Marijuana was prohibited in 1937 before most Americans had ever heard of it. Today the U.S. leads the world in marijuana consumption. Nearly 26 million Americans used marijuana last year and more than 100 million have tried it in their lifetimes. A huge commodity of the underground economy, marijuana is the nation’s top cash crop, valued at $14 billion in California alone. Our state Board of Equalization has estimated we would generate $1.4 billion a year by taxing marijuana like alcohol.

State Dems want to legalize medical marijuana to help plug budget gap

ALBANYSenate Democrats are counting on a pot of gold!

They want to legalize medical marijuana as a way to generate nearly $15 million in licensing fees to help plug the state’s $9 billion budget gap.

“It is the right thing to do and there is revenue attached to it,” said state Sen. Thomas Duane (D-Manhattan). Duane and Assemblyman Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan) are behind the plan to make it legal for folks with serious medical woes to score limited amounts of weed from state-certified distributors – or grow it themselves.
