March 2nd, 2010

Atlantic Beach, Orlando and Tallahassee Have Joined Jacksonville Beach.
A longtime effort to decriminalize marijuana possession in Jacksonville Beach has expanded to Atlantic Beach, as well as to Orlando and Tallahassee.
The Committee for Sensible Marijuana Policy launched the Atlantic Beach effort last month after advocates saw that many people who wanted to sign a Jacksonville Beach petition couldn’t because they lived in Atlantic Beach, said committee Chairman Ford Banister.
“It seemed like we could do it just as easily and it’s close by,” Banister said. Read the rest of this entry »

NORML to Collins: Restore Respect for Police by Ending Cannabis Prohibition
NORML President Phil Saxby today called on Police Minister Judith Collins to restore public respect for law enforcement by calling an armistice in this country’s prolonged “war on drugs”.
In response to recent attacks on Police Officers, Ms Collins has been quoted as saying that “it’s extremely important to rebuild the respect and fear for the law.”
“Fear of the law isn’t the problem,” said Mr Saxby. “What has been eroding away in New Zealand is respect for the law and then by association, those who enforce it.”
“The Misuse of Drugs Act created the so-called “war on drugs” which is actually a war on ordinary Kiwis. After thirty-five years of criminalisation, the 400,000 people from all walks of life who currently use cannabis justifiably feel marginalised and discriminated against.”

Bill to Legalize Marijuana Reintroduced in California
February 24th, 2010
Dakta Bourbon
Last week, Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), reintroduced legislation that would legalize weed in California for adults 21 and over. Back in January the California Assembly’s Public Safety Committee approved Assembly Bill 390 to legalize and tax marijuana, marking the first time in US history that a state legislative body considered putting an end to marijuana prohibition! The bill didn’t get much further since time ran out on the legislative calendar.
Ammiano forges on, however, with the new bill– now called A.B. 2254–which would allow adults over 21 to possess, smoke, and grow weed, essentially treating marijuana the same way alcohol is currently treated under the law. The bill also calls for a $50 per ounce sold fee to be used for funding drug eradication and awareness programs. And, of course supporters of the bill are saying it could raise around $990 million and help pull the severely cash-strapped California out of its budget crisis. Read the rest of this entry »

Medical marijuana protest planned for Obama visit
February 19th, 2010
Dakta Bourbon
DENVER (AP) – Medical marijuana advocates plan to protest recent drug raids during President Barack Obama’s visit to Denver.
Obama will be in town Thursday campaigning for Sen. Michael Bennet. His visit comes two days after a man who was allegedly growing over 200 marijuana plants in his Highlands Ranch home was charged with a federal crime.
Colorado is one of 14 states that allow medical marijuana and the Obama administration has said it wouldn’t target people who were in compliance with such laws.
But Denver’s top federal drug agent says Colorado’s law isn’t clear and the Highlands Ranch grower appeared to be violating it by growing so many plants.
Agents have also confiscated marijuana in recent weeks from two labs set up to test marijuana used in dispensaries.

TVNZ: Calls for laws to be softened
February 11th, 2010
Dakta Bourbon
A high powered legal team is calling for cannabis laws to be softened, with the penalties reduced for those caught with a small amount of the illegal drug.
The Law Commission also wants sick New Zealanders to be able to use marijuana for medicinal purposes.
The commission says large scale commercial drug dealing wreaks havoc in New Zealand’s communities and the law should continue to impose heavy penalties in these cases.
But President Sir Geoffrey Palmer says the Misuse of Drugs Act is over 30-years-old and patterns of drug use have changed markedly over this time.
Complain to the Broadcasting Standards Authority
February 10th, 2010
Dakta Bourbon
After the disgracefully one sided story that was shown on Tv1′s Close Up last night, we are encouraging everyone to send letters of complaint to the Broadcasting Standards Authority.
Considering the introductory segment of the article shows it as “Reefer Madness,” there is clearly going to be some classic Government/Media cover up involved.
Watch the story, or read the article for yourself if you haven’t already and judge it for yourself. We also have the original post on our site, with some comments.
Thanks to Hybrid for the link and excerpts.

Armistice Tour 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
7 February 2010
TO: News Media
FROM: NORML NZ and The Daktory
RE: Dakta Green warmly welcomed on Waitangi Walkabout
Cannabis activist Dakta Green received a rapturous Waitangi Day welcome yesterday with chants of “Free the Weed” from the mainly Maori crowd during a Waitangi walkabout.
Dakta Green was greeted like a celebrity while official Waitangi celebrations went on behind them, an enthusiastic crowd gathered around the Treaty flagpole to hear Dakta Green and NORML NZ President Phil Saxby launch the “Armistice Tour”.
“The Armistice Tour is about ending the drug war between the government and people of Aotearoa-New Zealand,” says Dakta Green. “We want to bring an end to decades of prejudice and hurt.”
NORML’s Cannabus (Maryjane) will tour New Zealand during the next three months, ending with a rally at parliament. “An Armistice means that neither side has to admit defeat. We start the tour with three proposed conditions for a just settlement of the drug wars:
• Adult use only- NZ has the highest rate of teenage cannabis use in the world
• Amnesty – stop arresting the people for cannabis (NZ has the highest arrest rate in the world for cannabis use)
• A regulated market – replace the uncontrolled criminal market with a regulated, taxable, cannabis trade.
