Ron Paul: End Insanity Of The War on Drugs – Start With Decriminalizing Marijuana at The Federal Level

In light of the recent drug-related violence in Mexico, it is appropriate to reflect on how our current prohibition laws affect crime, law enforcement and the economy.

Many will have the knee-jerk reaction of wanting to see more of a crackdown on illegal drugs. But I have to ask: Haven’t we been cracking down on drugs for several decades only to see the black market flourish and the violence escalate? Could there be a more effective approach?

Why I Give My 9-Year-Old Pot

We hit a snag and made a big discovery about how medical marijuana works for him.

This is the third DoubleX essay from Marie Myung-Ok Lee about treating her autistic son with marijuana. Read her first essay here
    and her second essay here.

Last summer, we reached the six-month mark in our cannabis experiment. We’d been using medical marijuana to help quell our autistic son’s gut pain and anxiety, and we were seeing some huge changes in his behavior and, presumably, his happiness. J was smiling, interacting (one of home-based therapists said she’d never encountered such an affectionate autistic child), even putting his dirty dishes in the dishwasher—rinsing and everything!—not only without being told, but without ever having been asked to do such a thing.

Why are Democrats Standing in the Way of Marijuana Legalization?

    Opinion by Reason Foundation
(9 Hours Ago) in Society / Drug Law

The most illuminating ride-along I’ve ever gone on was a three-hour bus tour of South Los Angeles with City Councilman Bernard Parks, who represents the area that before two deadly riots was known as South-Central L.A. and Watts.

Parks is not exactly my favorite public official. He draws a combined taxpayer-funded salary/pension of more than $400,000 a year, and as L.A.’s police chief in the 1990s he stonewalled corruption probes while alienating good officers with petty penalties for minor internal violations. But Parks is far more willing than his colleagues on the city council to deviate from the local Democratic consensus on issues from rent control to eminent domain. Above all, he’s a blunt-spoken fellow, providing a rare warts-and-all glimpse into a certain governing mind-set.

Sting: Let’s End the War on Drugs

Whether it’s music, activism or daily life, the one ideal to which I have always aspired is constant challenge — taking risks, stepping out of my comfort zone, exploring new ideas.

I am writing because I believe the United States must do precisely that — and so, therefore, must all of us — in the case of what has been the most unsuccessful, unjust yet untouchable issue in politics: the War on Drugs.

Slowly, US states are lessening limits on marijuana

By William M. Welchand Donna Leinwand, USA TODAY

LOS ANGELES — James Gray once saw himself as a drug warrior, a former federal prosecutor and county judge who sent people to prison for dealing pot and other drug offenses. Gradually, though, he became convinced that the ban on marijuana was making it more accessible to young people, not less.
“I ask kids all the time, and they’ll tell you it is easier to get marijuana than a six-pack of beer because that is controlled by the government,” he said, noting that drug dealers don’t ask for IDs or honor minimum age requirements. Read the rest of this entry »

Robbie Williams angers drug campaigners by calling cannabis a ‘lovely drug’

Robbie Williams has described cannabis as a “lovely drug”, sparking fury among campaigners.

The singer, who has battled addiction and depression, admitted the drug made his weight balloon and affected his mental wellbeing.

But he added: “Weed, it’s such a lovely drug. It is such a lovely drug. But it doesn’t mix well with me at all.

“It doesn’t take much to trigger – I mean, I’ll get psychosis from having this cup of tea! Seriously. The caffeine in that’s enough “But it’s just a shame about weed, because I did love it.” Read the rest of this entry »

Pot Shrinks Tumors; US Government Knew in ’74

    AlterNet / By Raymond Cushing

In 1974 researchers learned that THC, the active chemical in marijuana, shrank or destroyed brain tumors in test mice. But the DEA quickly shut down the study and destroyed its results, which were never replicated — until now.

May 31, 2000 | The term medical marijuana took on dramatic new meaning in February, 2000 when researchers in Madrid announced they had destroyed incurable brain tumors in rats by injecting them with THC, the active ingredient in cannabis.

The Madrid study marks only the second time that THC has been administered to tumor-bearing animals; the first was a Virginia investigation 26 years ago. In both studies, the THC shrank or destroyed tumors in a majority of the test subjects. Read the rest of this entry »
